Pre-Operative Instructions

Before Intravenous Conscious Sedation

You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for six to eight (6 to 8) hours prior to the appointment.

No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.

Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to Dr. Rezvan‘s office, be accessible to Dr. Rezvan or his staff during the procedure, drive you home after the procedure and be with you until the effects of the sedation have worn off.

The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.

Please wear loose comfortable fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow. No high heels.

Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.

Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.

If you take routine oral medications, please check with Dr. Rezvan prior to your surgical date for instructions.

Post-Operative Instructions

These instructions apply to the surgical procedure just completed. They are designed to help you minimize post-surgical discomfort and inform you of any situation that may require special attention.

Bleeding

You may see bloodstains in your saliva for a day or two after surgery. This is normal and usually ends by the 3rd day. If oozing persists, sit quietly and compress the gum tissue with a moisten regular (not herbal) teabag for 30 minutes.

Swelling

Your face will probably swell around the areas treated. This is normal. To reduce swelling, place an ice pack over the area; 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off as much as you can for the first 24 hours. The swelling will peak 48-72 hrs after surgery, and will subside within 7 days.

Diet

For your comfort, soft and cold foods are recommended. Avoid sharp foods like nuts, sunflower seeds or popcorn, which could cause damage to the surgical site.

If a dental implant was placed, avoid chewing on the implants for the next few months as it heals.

Pain

You should begin taking pain medication as soon as you feel the local anesthetic wearing off. For moderate pain, 1 or 2 Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol may be taken every 3-4 hours. Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) may be taken instead of Tylenol. Ibuprofen, bought over the counter comes in 200 mg tablets: 2-3 tablets may be taken every 3-4 hours as needed for pain. For severe pain, the prescribed medication should be taken as directed. Do not take any of the above medication if you are allergic, or have been instructed by your doctor not to take it.

Antibiotics

As directed, please take and finish your antibiotics to prevent an infection.

Oral Hygiene

Good oral care is important for healing. Continue to brush and floss the teeth which were not involved. Do NOT brush or floss the surgical area(s) unless instructed by Dr. Rezvan. If a mouthwash was prescribed, rinse twice day for 30 seconds for one week post surgery.

Activity

Keep physical activities to a minimum immediately following surgery for 2-3 days. If you are considering exercise, throbbing or bleeding may occur. This may cause increase in discomfort due to swelling.
